Context and Philosophy:

Friends School of Baltimore has an opening in the Lower School Science Department starting in the 2023-24 school year. This position will be a full-time position and have teaching assignments that include teaching science to 3rd Grade, 4th Grade and 5th Grade. Teachers will use the Amplify Science Curriculum.

Responsibilities:

  • Instill a love of science and nature
  • Teach hands-on, elementary science curriculum to Grades 3, 4 and 5 including:
  • the human systems including the reproductive systems to 4th Grade
  • STEAM Fair to 5th Grade
  • Engineering Design projects to 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades
  • Collaborate with teachers within the division and cross-divisionally
  • Grade assignments and projects
  • Provide parents and administrators with written and oral student progress reports
  • Provide lesson plans to administration upon request or when absent
  • Attend two day-long field trips with 4th Grade
  • Attend an overnight (three days/two nights) field trip with 5th Grade
  • Be a resource teacher for homeroom and special-area teachers, including planning and co-teaching special topics
  • Assist in planning and executing activities for students on special LS days (PLUSS Days)
  • Attend All-School Professional Days, Science Department and Lower School Faculty meetings
  • Commit to ongoing professional development
  • Assist in arrival and dismissal duties

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is required. Degree in science preferred.
  • Experience teaching hands-on science to elementary school students (ages 8 to 11) is preferred.
