5 th Grade Humanities Teacher

Full Time – 1 year position – 2021-22

School year starting in August 2021, ending in June 2022

Job Responsibilities

This opening is a full time one year middle school position, with the following major responsibilities:

  • Teach two sections of 5 th grade Humanities
    • This position is a member of both the English and Social Studies departments, and is responsible for teaching both subjects to 36 5 th grade students, split into two sections of 18 students each. Our 5 th grade Humanities teacher is asked to teach English and Social Studies in tandem to create an integrated study of language arts and history, with myths, stories, and ancient civilizations as the focus.
    • Additional duties include overseeing a homeroom advisory of 9-10 students, sponsoring a club, overseeing study halls, and taking part in a grade level retreat in the fall.
    • Expectations for teachers include providing regular feedback via frequent assessments, being available to help students one-on-one during study hall periods, communicating to students via our course management system (Canvas), and providing feedback to families via quarterly rubrics and reports.
    • Teachers in the middle school are part of our grade level MESH (math, English, science, history / social studies) teams and collaborate weekly with each other on topics including curricular intersections and coordination of major assignments and projects.
    • Teachers are expected to participate in all faculty development days and department/team meetings as needed in order to collaborate on curriculum as well as with any student support issues that may arise.

We are looking for teachers who…

  • Have experience teaching people under the age of 18
    • Preferably, but not necessarily, with students in the 8 to 13 age range.
    • While Overlake classrooms lean towards a more traditional classroom setting, we welcome applicants with experience in other settings.
  • Demonstrate a history of an open and collaborative approach to teaching and learning.
    • All of our middle school teachers work collaboratively in grade level teams.
    • We have an established curriculum that will be the basis for instruction in the course, though the teachers can work with the department and grade-level teams to make improvements or changes as needed
  • Possess a level of cultural competency necessary for working with a diverse population in an inclusive and equitable community.
    • We have a diverse student body, and we want all our teachers to have the skills necessary to ensure that their classrooms are safe, inclusive places for everyone.
    • We seek a Humanities teacher who is aware of the racial, socio-economic, gender, and many other inequities present in education, and actively works to eliminate them in their classroom.
  • Can communicate well, both in writing and verbally, with colleagues, students, and families.
    • Much of our work involves clear, frequent communication with families on student progress, recommendations, and program information.
    • Continuous work happens in writing and updating curriculum and the teacher needs to be comfortable with updating and keeping written records of work completed in the course.

  • Model a culture of flexible, continuous learning for students.
    • We want our teachers to be people who are excited to learn and try new things
    • New Overlake teachers do not need to come in as experts in the specific technologies or methods we currently use, but should have the flexibility and ability to learn and improve on them.
